Day 16 – Sigiriya (Lion Rock) and Dambulla Caves & Temple

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sigiriya is a monolithic rock rising 200m above the countryside providing the impressive home for an ancient citadel….amazing views, but also home to more neglected dogs :-((

Surrounded by water gardens and moats it must truly have been a magical sight 1500 years ago!! It’s other treasure are the frescos … don’t fully portray the work involved!!!

Dambulla Caves & Temple….. wow!!! A hidden Buddhist gem and surrounded by the sweet fragrant scented Frangipani Trees… absolute favourite, going to miss this so much when back in London…..and the monkeys who flood the trees with their crazy acrobatics!!!!

The multiple rooms of the temple are all within natural caves adorned with ceilings covered entirely with detailed frescos….just incredible for their age!!! And then there are Buddha statues of all shapes and sizes, loads of them, including a horizontal Buddha lying down (the largest in Sri Lanka). A cultural end to the day…..time for a beer!!
